SALT LAKE CITY — As co-hosts of the “KSL Movie Show,” Andy Farnsworth and Steve Salles watch A LOT of movies each year. In 2024 alone each of them watched over 200 different new releases, with Steve getting close to 300. Not all the films they watch are of the greatest quality, but many of them are indeed worth your time.

As heard on the final Movie Show of 2024, here are Andy and Steve’s lists of their top 5 movies, plus a handful of honorable mentions and where to watch them*:

Related: Andy’s best movies of 2024

5. “Wicked” (PG-13)

Outstanding performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. One of the best musicals in years. [Still playing in theaters, including sing-along versions; available to purchase via VOD starting Dec. 30]

4. “His Three Daughters” (R)

Their father is dying and his grown daughters are fighting. These three actresses, Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen, could all be nominated for best actress, which means none of them will win. [Available to stream on Netflix]

3. “Young Woman and the Sea” (PG)

A truly inspiring story about a potential U.S. Olympic swimmer from the 1900s who, fortunately, has Daisy Ridley committed to bringing her story to life. [Available to stream on Disney+]

2. “Music by John Williams” (PG)

This Disney+ documentary features one of the greatest composers of the modern era—maybe even of all time. You’ll be blown away at how prolific and diverse his masterpieces are. This is a total hero worship experience for me. [Available to stream on Disney+]

1. “The Wild Robot” (PG)

In a not-too-distant future, a robot named Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) must adapt to living on an island inhabited only by animals. In so doing, she finds purpose and fulfillment attempting to parent a stranded gosling. It has threads of “The Giving Tree” with the humor and heart of “The Iron Giant.” [Available to purchase/rent through VOD; no streaming date or service announced yet]

*Note: VOD means “video on demand.” It refers to places where you can purchase or rent digital copies of movies, like through Apple, Amazon, or Fandango at Home.

At least this time we get 20 minutes into the film before Pixar pulls the waterworks from our eyes. "Toy Story 5" was something I did not think we needed after TS4 ended so nicely, but I was wrong.
