SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Transportation says a number of seasonal roads and mountain passes in northern Utah won’t be open by Memorial Day this year.

These northern mountain passes include Guardsman Pass, the Mirror Lake Highway and Monte Cristo.

According to UDOT’s Facebook page, “from Utah County to the south, UDOT crews are expecting to have all seasonal roads open by Memorial Day. This includes Wolf Creek Pass, the Alpine Loop, Cedar Breaks and Mt. Holly Junction Road.”

Spokesman John Gleason tells KSL Newsradio the unusual amount of snow over the winter, with storms as recently as today, has kept the snowpack near 15 to 20 feet in some spots and it’s not safe to open those roads yet.

Drone video shows just how much snow is still in the higher elevations.

Gleason says they are hoping to open the northern mountain passes within a month but it will all depend on when the run-off allows.

For a full list of road closures and when they’ll reopen, visit UDOT‘s website.

We want to hear from you.
