Jordan School District proposes raising teacher starting salary to $48,000

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — The Jordan School District is the latest district looking to give teachers a raise, proposing a raise of starting pay to $48,000 next fall.
This latest move to bring more teachers to the district would be about $5,000 less than the neighboring Canyons and Murray School district, but the proposal from the Jordan District would allow step increases of $875 without a cap.
“I don’t know another district that’s done that,” Jordan School Board President Bryce Dunford said during a presentation for teachers at Elk Ridge Middle School on Wednesday as reported by the Deseret News.
The raise is dependent on the approval of a property tax increase that would bring an extra $18 increase to property owners for every $100,000 in the assessed value of their homes and businesses. The tax would also need to be ratified by the teacher association.
The property tax hike that would come from an increase in the School boards levy doesn’t require voter approval, but if approved by the board Dunford says that they will reach out to seek community input.
The deal also includes $4.5 million in teacher incentive grants and would not include any increase in health insurance premiums.
