UTAH — It’s road construction season in Utah.  And this weekend kicks off several major projects for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT).

Southbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane for a 7-mile stretch from 9 p.m. tonight until 8 a.m. tomorrow morning between Beck Street in North Salt Lake and 2100 South in South Salt Lake.  Then the same restrictions begin again 9 p.m. Saturday night all the way through 5 a.m. Monday morning.

UDOT spokesman John Gleason says crews will repair concrete pavement through this area during the closures, which will occur each weekend over the next three weeks.

“Drivers should expect 30-minutes or more to their commutes or there are several alternate routes available,” Gleason said.

And for those overnight travelers going even further south on I-15 next weekend, you’ll run into more lane restrictions in Juab county.

Starting Friday, June 19, I-15 southbound will be reduced to one lane between the Sevier River bridge and the Juab/Millard County border.  Gleason says UDOT typically opens all lanes of travel on Friday afternoons to accommodate weekend travelers, but this project requires keeping one-lane closed to complete the seven miles of repaving during the summer months.  So anyone heading toward St. George should allow at least 30 extra minutes for their drive.

This weekend also sees a complete closure of a very busy ramp.

“The transition ramp from I-215 westbound in Murray to go southbound I-15 will close this Sunday night until early Monday morning for bridge repair,” Gleason said.

People on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley will need to find an alternate route to use I-15 southbound.  However, the northbound ramp from I-215 in Murray to I-15 will be open.

Gleason reminds drivers “to be vigilant in road construction zones.  And slow down to keep themselves and the workers safe.”
