Mendenhall calls for transparent investigation after police shooting Friday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall is calling for a swift and transparent investigation into a police shooting that hospitalized a teenage boy Friday night.
“While the full details of this incident are yet to be released as an investigation takes place, I will say that I am thankful this young boy is alive and no one else was injured,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “No matter the circumstances, what happened on Friday night is a tragedy and I expect this investigation to be handled swiftly and transparently for the sake of everyone involved.”
Salt Lake police responded to a call Friday on 500 South Navajo Street, receiving concerns a teenager was threatening others with a weapon. Officers described it as a “psychological episode.”
By the time officers arrived on scene, the boy ran. During the short pursuit, an officer shot the boy, according to reports.
No details were immediately released as to why the officer fired at the boy. The extent of his injuries are also unclear.
Over the weekend, police remained quiet on the issue — not releasing any further details on the boy’s condition or reasons for the shooting.
This comes after Mayor Mendenhall issued an executive order in August that changed the city’s protocol on use of force — which also included how police conduct search and seizures, and established disciplinary action for officers who either fail to activate or intentionally turn off their body cameras.
Those new polices went into effect Saturday — one day after the shooting in Salt Lake City.
