SANDY, Utah — Two teenagers are each facing 17 counts of burglary, theft, and criminal mischief associated with breaking into multiple schools in Sandy City.

In one instance, Jacob Trapp, 18, and Reise Jones, 19, are said to have used rappelling gear to get into the building through a skylight.

The thefts occurred at Altara, Lone Peak, Park Lane, Sprucewood and Sunrise Elementary schools and at Eastmont Middle School.

Jones and Trapp are accused of stealing items ranging from pink unicorns to 3-D printers. The pair was caught in July after police were alerted to an alarm at one of the schools.

According to police documents, Trapp and Jones were found with other items from the schools as well, including candy, desk nameplates, a megaphone, and a laptop.

The story begins

The thefts were first reported on April 19, 2021, at Sprucewood and Lone Peak Elementary Schools. According to police, at both schools, alarms had detected motion on the roof hatches and other areas of the schools.

Lone Peak Elementary school captured video surveillance of the suspects, including video of the suspects trying to disable the video surveillance.

The next report came on May 16, from Park Lane Elementary where there was also video evidence of the suspects. There, they stole someone’s lunch from the staff break room.

Then, on July 17, Sandy police reported that they responded to an alarm at Eastmont Middle School where there was only damage done to ceiling tiles.

Finally on July 26, Sandy police responded to school alarms at Sunrise Elementary and Altara Elementary school. It was near Altara Elementary, in the area of 11282 South Woodhill Drive that police said they saw two individuals dressed in black carrying “large pink unicorns” running from a nearby neighborhood.

One of the suspects, Reise Jones, was apprehended by Canyons School District security at a park on Londonberry Drive. The second suspect,  Jacob Trapp, was apprehended by police after he pulled up in a vehicle at 11282 South Wood Hill Drive and asked police who were there with a K-9 officer if “they had seen his wallet anywhere in the area.”

When asked if he lost his wallet running from the police, the suspect reportedly admitted he had.
