LAYTON — A new ambulance service at Hill Air Force Base is expected to reduce emergency response times and the tax burden on Utahns.

Hill Air Force Base averages about 350 medical emergencies each year. The Standard-Examiner reported Hill’s demonstrated need for emergency services led the 75th Medical Group, Utah’s military treatment facility, to seek a solution for long response times.

Shorter response times

When the base used a civilian ambulance service, the response time for an emergency at Hill was about 20 minutes, according to the Standard-Examiner. The new ambulance service cuts response time down to about 7 minutes.

The Standard reported the base now has three ambulances to serve the roughly 25,000 people living there.

Reduced tax costs

A fire official tells the paper the outside service did a great job, but it cost about $1.5 million each year.

The addition of the on-base ambulances should reduce tax costs, according to those fire officials.
