SALT LAKE CITY — Ahead of a funeral on Friday, the late Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch was remembered as a loving grandfather by his grandson, Tyler Hatch, at a viewing at the Utah State Capitol Wednesday evening.

Hatch will be remembered by his family and by the community he served at a funeral service in Salt Lake City Friday afternoon before a burial with military honors in the Cache Valley town of Newton.

Tyler Hatch grew emotional as he recalled moments with his grandfather at their family home in Virginia.

“We’d spend family dinners with him, have hot chocolate,” he told KSL NewsRadio’s Lindsay Aerts.

“He’d come to my rugby games, my sister’s choirs, and all that kind of stuff. So he was just a great grandfather to us.”

He also expressed gratitude for the hundreds of people who came to remember the late Senator and pay their respects.

“It’s nice seeing all that support for him and all the things he did for the church and for the country,” Tyler said.

Hatch will be buried Friday afternoon in his wife Elaine’s hometown of Newton, Utah, following a funeral service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Institute of Religion at the University of Utah.

KSL NewsRadio will broadcast the service live beginning at 1 p.m.
