ELKO, Nevada — On Saturday, May 7, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held ceremonies for the upcoming Elko, Nevada Temple.

“This temple will be God’s House … a bounteous mine of spiritual ‘gold’ that will truly enrich us,” said Elder Paul B. Pieper of the Quorum of Seventy, who presided over the ceremonies. “…we need not look anywhere else to find true and lasting peace, happiness, and fulfillment in our lives, our families, and our homes.”

Saturday’s ceremonies commemorate the start of construction on the temple.

“We are thankful for the blessing of a temple in Elko, and for the many faithful souls, past and present, who for many years have traveled great distances to other temples to receive sacred ordinances … and who have prayed for the day when a temple would be built in Elko,” said Elder Pieper in the dedicatory prayer.

The Elko, Nevada Temple will be Nevada’s third. It follows the Las Vegas, Nevada Temple, dedicated in December 1989, and the Reno, Nevada Temple, dedicated in April 2000.

According to an article published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple is to be built on a 5.2-acre site near the southeast corner of Ruby View Golf Course. It will have one story and be about 10,000 square feet.

Those in attendance were congregations from Elko and surrounding towns. For those who could not attend, there was a broadcast of the ceremonies. When available, the broadcast can be found here.

19 additional upcoming temples

President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build the Elko, Nevada Temple in April 2021. At this time, he also announced 19 other upcoming temples to be built around the globe. Temples will be in a variety of locations from Oslo, Norway to Cape Town, South Africa. This was the second-highest number of temples announced at one time in the history of the Church.

The temple will serve church members living in northeastern Nevada and areas close to the region.
