Passenger in Uber crash identified, SLC Police take over investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified the passenger that died in a crash between a UTA train and a vehicle operated by an Uber ride-share driver on Wednesday.
Jalen Neal, age 28, was critically injured in the crash between a Chevy Bolt and the train. Neal died on the scene despite life-saving efforts from first responders.
The crash happened near 700 S. and West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City. Police said the Uber driver was speeding when he ran a red light and crashed into the TRAX train as it crossed 700 S.
The driver of the Bolt is cooperating in the investigation according to police, and has been deactivated as an Uber driver according to the company.
No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.
In another development, Salt Lake City Police is now investigating the crash after an initial investigation by police with the Utah Transit Authority. UTA requested the change along with help from the SLC PD’s Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team.
This crash marks the 22nd deadly traffic-related incident in Salt Lake City for 2022.
