LAYTON, Utah — Counselors will be at Layton High School on Wednesday after a stabbing on Tuesday afternoon.

Both people involved in the Layton stabbing are students at the school. The 15-year-old victim was hospitalized at McKay Dee hospital in stable condition, the 16-year-old suspect is in custody.

Lt. Travis Lyman with Layton police said fights among students aren’t unexpected, but this was an escalation.

“High school kids tend to have these disagreements. Sometimes it turns into a fist fight, but this is definitely an escalation that we hate to see,” Lyman said.

A group of students reportedly left campus and went to a nearby park to “sort out a disagreement,” according to police.

Two students began fighting, and then police said one of the students pulled a sharp object from a backpack and used it to stab another student.

The object was originally described as a knife, but later reports confirmed it was a pair of pruning shears.

Police said that three schools in the area were placed on lockout as the situation was resolved. By 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the students were headed home.

Layton High principal Brock Jackman sent the following message to parents early Tuesday evening.

Our school was placed in lockout shortly before 1 p.m. today after the Layton City Police Department received a report of an altercation at a nearby park. During a lockout, the outside doors to the school remain locked while classes continue as normal. That lockout lasted about 45 minutes.

For your information, two of our students were involved, and police are continuing their investigation of the incident. Anyone with information about the situation is asked to call police at 801-497-8300.

Also, school counselors will be available to any student who feels they’d like additional support tomorrow.
