KANAB, Utah — A 42-year-old woman is in custody following a high-speed chase Sunday in Kane County, police say.

According to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began a little after 11 a.m. A deputy with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office noticed a Jeep traveling more than 100 miles per hour. It was roughly 20 miles east of Kanab.

As the deputy was turning around to follow the vehicle, he noticed a Chevy Camaro also heading in the same direction as the Jeep, traveling at speeds more than 100 mph.

After assistance from another Kane County deputy and an officer from the Kanab Police Department arrived on scene, the Jeep came to a stop.

The Camaro, however, continued to travel in excess of 120 mph. The chase went into Kanab where the suspect drove down residential streets. The suspect finally found her way back onto U.S Highway 89.

The ending to the Kanab County chase

As the Camaro pulled away from the pursuing officers, other law enforcement personnel were preparing to spike the tires of the fleeing vehicle north of Kanab.

Due to the speed limitations on the patrol vehicles, the Camaro was able to pull away from police. However, when the deputy got to the top of the hill near milepost 75, he could see that the Camaro had crashed into a cedar tree, according to a news release.

The driver of the Camaro was taken into custody a short time later as she attempted to flee on foot. The suspect has been identified as Devnee Petefish of Idaho.

The suspect was taken to the Kane County Hospital for examination. Upon release from the hospital, Petefish was booked into the Kane County Jail on investigation of drug charges. She was also booked for investigation of possession of a weapon, DUI and several traffic violations.

Law enforcement personnel later discovered Petefish had arrest warrants out in Arizona and Idaho. According to the news release, authorities searched her car and discovered a large quantity of methamphetamine. Police also found more than 900 fentanyl pills, drug paraphernalia, drug distribution equipment and a loaded firearm.

The case is still under investigation.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office says the Jeep involved in the initial chase wasn’t connected to the Camaro. Authorities say for the driver of the Jeep, it was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
