SALT LAKE CITY –Dr. Martin W. Bates was sworn in Wednesday evening as the interim superintendent for the Salt Lake City School District.

“We are thrilled to have his leadership over the next few months while the Board of Education works to identify and hire a new superintendent,” a district statement read in a Facebook posting.

Earlier this month, Bates was appointed unanimously by the Salt Lake City Board of Education to serve as interim superintendent. Bates replaced Timothy Gadson III, who resigned from the position effective Oct. 1.

Before retiring in 2021, Bates had spent more than 30 years in education. He started out as a special education and math teacher. Later in his career, Bates served in a variety of school and district administrative positions. He spent the last 11 years as the superintendent of the Granite School District.
