HERRIMAN, Utah — The Herriman Police Department is responding to shots fired in the area of Herriman Towne Center Sunday night.

According to Deputy Chief Cody Stromberg with HPD, the incident began around 3:45 p.m. The subject called police police saying he was having thoughts of ending his life.

From here, officers attempted to talk him through the mental health crisis he was experiencing, Stromberg said.

“Unfortunately, those negotiations, sort of, deteriorated,” Stromberg said.

Following this, the subject fired a rifle into his neighborhood and the surrounding area.

Stromberg said the man is a veteran and suspects he is dealing with PTSD.

He has only made threats to himself at this time, though police are currently asking residents of the area to shelter in place. They should shelter in basements if possible.

Police say SWAT is enroute.

Shelter in place

Police are asking only residents in the Herriman Towne Center area to shelter in place. A few other areas have received false emergency alerts. this includes Riverton, West Valley, Murray, and north Lehi.

Lehi city released the following statement:

“We have received reports that residents in the North part of Lehi are receiving a shelter in place on their mobile phones. We want to be clear that currently there is not an active incident in Lehi,” the statement reads. “It is reported there is an active incident in the south end of Salt lake County. Utah Valley Dispatch believes that the phones receiving the messages are possibly connecting to a tower that is in Salt Lake County. To clarify, there is not currently any incident requiring a shelter in place in Lehi City.”

This situation is ongoing.
