SALT LAKE CITY — A confrontation between a bicyclist and a Utah Transit Authority bus driver has left the driver with a broken hip, according to UTA officials.

Carl Arky, a spokesman for UTA, says the incident occurred in the area of 900 E. 1000 S. Thursday afternoon.

He says a bus passed the bicyclist on 900 E. According to Arky, when the bus came to its next stop, the cyclist came up to the driver’s side of the bus and began yelling at the driver. The bicyclist then pushed in the side-view mirror.

Arky says the driver got out to fix the mirror. That’s when the bicyclist allegedly pushed the driver to the ground. The driver was transported to LDS Hospital with a broken hip. Arky says the injury to the driver, who has been identified as Paul Bateman, may require surgery.

The suspect left the scene following the confrontation. The bicyclist later called police to tell them he was the individual involved in the incident. However, Arky is unsure if the suspect has been taken into custody.

A witness to the incident described the driver as an “older gentleman” and said the driver was between 60 and 70 years of age.
