SALT LAKE CITY — The Internal Revenue Service began processing 2022 tax returns Monday, marking the official start of tax season.

Susan Spiers, CEO of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants joined Utah’s Morning News Monday to offer some tips and advice on tax season.

She says people wanting to get their returns back quickly, should file electronically and should do so as soon as possible.

“If it’s a more complex return,” she said. “It’s going to take a little longer to get that refund.”

Spiers says it can take a couple of weeks to receive your refund.

Additionally, she says there are a couple of things to keep in mind as you prepare your tax returns.

“The standard deduction amounts have gone up,” she said. “As well as the itemized deduction amounts. So be aware of that.”

She says for people waiting on documents to arrive in the mail, the wait should be almost over.

“Sometimes, we have struggled getting those 1099s from brokerage houses, if you have investments,” she said. “But you should have your W2s by the end of the month.”

The last day to file your taxes with the IRS is Monday, April 17.
