New t-shirt sold by USU backs Ukrainian basketball player

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah State University is offering a new t-shirt after Colorado State fans reportedly taunted a Ukrainian basketball player. 

The University’s campus store has introduced shirts with the Ukrainian flag and the statement, “Stand Together.”

For $12 you can support both USU and Ukraine. The school will donate $2 from every t-shirt sold to Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection (CRIC.)

According to its website, CRIC connects displaced refugees with donors in the Cache Valley. More specifically, CRIC finds housing and employment and helps refugees prepare for life in the U.S.

This is the latest show of campus support for Max Shulga a USU basketball player from Kyiv, Ukraine who shot free throws on Saturday while Colorado State students shouted “Russia, Russia.”

Emilie Wheeler from USU media relations said the t-shirt was created to show support for “all faculty, students, and staff impacted by the events in Ukraine.”

Colorado State has since issued an apology. 

Following tonight’s basketball game, we became aware that a small group of individuals in our student section chanted “Russia” at a student-athlete from Utah State, who is from the Ukraine.
