SALT LAKE CITY — If you’re hitting the powder this weekend, make sure you’re properly prepared to make the most of recent snowstorms.

There are many activities to partake in with the recent snowstorm, such as snowshoeing, skiing, and snowboarding. That said, it’s important to know the geography of the area before you go.

“One of the first things to consider is the difference between a leeward side of a mountain where you have more wind build-up of snow and then also north and south facing,” said Martin Frey with Summit Journeys.

People should be aware of when they’re snowshoeing to be cautious of the terrain and to keep on low slope angles. Frey said to avoid the edge of certain trails.

“Make sure you have good layers of clothing and good footwear particularly when you’re snowshoeing through deep snow you tend to get a lot of snow everywhere,” he told KSL NewsRadio.

If you’re hiking you need to be aware of cold exposure. Also, be aware of your footing near exposed faces, in case it’s not well supported by the snow. Lastly, while hiking, avoid areas of built-up snow caused by the wind on slab areas.

‘It’s always good to bring an emergency fire or signaling system particularly if you’re out of cell phone area,” Frey said.

The best place to check snow conditions from recent snowstorms is the Utah Avalanche Center website.
