Three assault rifles among 30 guns turned in at buy-back event

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department held a gun buy-back event on Saturday, March 25, 2023. The department has just announced the results.
Thirty guns have been turned in and bought back by SLCPD. SLCPD reports the buying of four pistols, 10 revolvers, six shotguns, and 10 rifles, three of which were assault-style.
Allegedly, the guns collected may be donated to the Salt Lake City Police Mutual Aid Association’s Museum or the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Crime Lab.
However, if neither of those options are chosen, the guns will be destroyed.
At the event, SLCPD claims to as no questions and requires a no-ID check.
SLCPD wrote in a press release, “[the event} raises awareness to the number of guns in our community.”
To further promote gun handling and storage, Intermountain Health donated the locks to the SLCPD that were distributed at the event.
As far as future buyback events, they will be based on resource and funding availability.
