Gov. Cox issues proclamations for new election schedule to fill vacancy of Rep. Chris Stewart

SALT LAKE CITY — In an effort to fill the vacancy of Rep. Chris Stewart in Utah’s Second Congressional District, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox issued two proclamations on Wednesday to create a new election schedule.

The first proclamation calls for a special election. It also creates timelines for the election.

The timeline, determined by the legislative and executive branches, calls for statewide primary elections to be held on Sept. 5, with the general election scheduled for Nov. 21.

The second proclamation calls for a Special Session of the Utah Legislature. In that session, lawmakers will appropriate money for the election. Among other election-related issues, lawmakers will also change municipal election dates to fit the new election schedule.

The Special Session will be held June 14 at 4 p.m.

Earlier Wednesday, the governor received a letter of resignation from Stewart, stating his last day will be Sept. 15.
