SALT LAKE CITY — Officials have an inmate back in custody at the Davis County jail after he was inadvertently released to his mother on Tuesday. The Utah Department of Corrections said Joseph Armijo is now back behind bars.

Officials approved Armijo, 34, for release on parole. However, the Board of Pardons rescinded the approval.

“He was actually set for release on Tuesday but the board rescinded that parole over a disciplinary violation,” said Glen Mills, the Department of Corrections director of communications and government relations.

When they realized their mistake, adult probation and parole personnel went to Armijo’s mother’s home. They took him back into custody. He is now at the Utah State Prison.

“He obviously was at some point progressing toward parole, but due to that violation was not ready for that. Any time that happens we need to make sure to act immediately to remedy that problem and get that person back in custody,” said Mills.

The disciplinary violation officials gave Armijo was for a non-violent incident.

The Department of Corrections and the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said they are conducting an investigation. It will determine how the mistake happened, and how to prevent it from happening in the future.
