OGDEN, Utah — Two mule deer were illegally killed in Cache County last month by a .22 caliber firearm. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is now looking for more information.

The DWR said a passer-by found the mule deer near the Porcupine Reservoir boat ramp in early January 2024. Conservation officers said the two dead mule deer were a doe and a yearling buck.

Officers believe the animals were killed between Jan. 2 and Jan. 5, 2024.

There are multiple ways that someone with information can contact the DWR. They include:

  • calling the UTiP Hotline at 800-662-3337,
  • using the UTDWR Law Enforcement app,
  • texting 847411,
  • or contacting officers through the DWR website.

You can also call 435-503-4971, and speak with a DWR officer directly.

There were approximately 335,000 deer in Utah when wildlife biologists conducted their latest survey in 2022. In the winter months, it is not uncommon to see them in the foothill areas of Utah’s valleys. Some people may even find the deer in their backyards.

Wild Aware Utah encourages anybody encountering mule deer to refrain from feeding them and to slow down if you see them while driving.
