KENNSBURG, CO — An Amtrak engineer from Park City, Utah suffered life-threatening injuries Monday night after a train crash in Colorado.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. in Keensburg, Colorado. It was between an Amtrak train, named California Zepyr Train 6, and a semi-tanker trailer carrying 10,000 gallons of milk.

According to Sgt. Troy Kessler of the Colorado State Patrol, a 31-year-old man from Alaska was driving the semi.

The semi was northbound on Weld County Road 398 and was across the railroad crossing. The Amtrak train was approaching eastbound on Weld County Road 68 and collided with the left side of the trailer, Kessler told KSL.

There were 69 passengers on board the Amtrak when the train hit the semi. Kessler said all of them got off the train, shortly after impact.

Amtrak reported that all of the passenger cars remained upright.

The engineer was transported to a hospital by air.

Along with the engineer, three passengers suffered minor injuries officials said. At this time, police said the accident did not involve drugs or alcohol.

Passengers were taken from the scene by chartered bus according to a statement from Amtrak. The company said the passengers were lodged and were given a choice of destinations “over various modes,” at Amtrak expense.
