WEST VALLEY, Utah — The Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation announced that it has secured naming rights to the art gallery inside of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center

The Spanish writer, painter and sculptor has promoted cultural diversity and human rights through her work during her career, according a press release.

“We have enjoyed a long collaboration with UCCC to bring art and cultural awareness to our communities. [The] Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation is excited to see a gallery named after Pilar. She has uniquely inspired so many of us and is deserving of this honor,” said Monica Whalen, the president of the Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation.

The Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation has invited the community to celebrate the dedication of the gallery. The free event will take place on March 8, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

According to the press release, the event will include displays of Pobils art, as well as live music.

Who is Pilar Pobil?

According to Pilar Pobil’s website, she is a self-taught artist. She works with oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints as well as with clay sculpture to create her vibrant, expressionistic style.

“I push the essence I perceive as far as I can,” said Pobil in her artist statement.

Pobil was born in  Spain in 1926, “at a time when women were not encouraged to pursue their ambitions,” per her artist statement.

After she married, Pobil moved to the United States. An artist her whole life, she didn’t begin working in her chosen field until she reached her forties.

Per her website, Pobil’s work has been featured in numerous galleries. In 2016, Pobil was recognized by her home country of Spain for her cultural contributions.

Additionally, Pobil was named one of Utah’s 15 Most Influential Artists by Utah’s Art Magazine in 2018.

On Feb. 28, 2024, a gallery titled Mi Vida – My Art, will open at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. The gallery will feature retrospective works from Pobil. It will be on display until May 29.
