SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Opera announced that it will present The Marriage of Figaro. The opera, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, will open at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theater on Saturday, March 9.
The Utah Opera said that The Marriage of Figaro is a follow-up to Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, which the company presented in 2021.
The production follows Figaro and Susanna, two servants of Count Almaviva. As the Count tries to prevent their marriage with romantic advances on Susanna, Figaro and the couple’s allies work to outsmart him, per the Utah Opera press release.
“Audiences are invited to return to the grand estate of Count Almaviva, where Figaro and Susanna, now engaged, prepare for their impending nuptials,” read the press release.
Madison Leonard and Adam Lau are returning to the Utah Opera to play Susanna and Figaro.
Leonard previously performed in the opera’s 2023 production of The Daughter of the Regiment. Additionally, Lau performed in the 2021 production of The Barber of Seville.
Ticket information and a complete list of show dates is available at the Utah Opera website.
History of The Marriage of Figaro
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed The Marriage of Figaro in 1786, according to the English National Opera.
His composition was based on the play by La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais, who was a French playwright, among other occupations.
Following its premiere, the opera was highly controversial because of its subject matter. According to the English National Opera, the idea of servants rebelling against their masters outraged aristocrats.
Consequently, the English National Opera said the play was banned in Vienna. At the time, Mozart was based there, in the court of Emperor Joseph II.
Per Opera North, The Marriage of Figaro was also banned in other places. However, it did not specify where.
The English National Opera said The Marriage of Figaro is a great first or early production for those who are unfamiliar with operas.
