SALT LAKE CITY —  A popular road in Salt Lake City is getting a makeover and the city has released a revised plan based on input from residents.

The plan will add safety improvements to 600 and 700 North, between Redwood Road and 800 West.

The city estimates that up to 24,000 vehicles use the stretch of road every day, particularly between 800 West and I-15.

They define the roadway as a “critical connection between the residents, parks, goods and services of Rose Park, Fairpark, Capitol Hill, Marmalade, and Downtown, as well as Interstate 15.”

Officials have reported 139 crashes on the route in the past five years, as well as two pedestrian fatalities.

What drivers and residents can expect on the new 600 North

City officials will add new bike lanes that are separate from the portion of the road used by automobiles. The city also plans to build a center median.

Pedestrians who use this road can expect new shade landscaping, enhanced crosswalks with flashing lights and extended curbs designed to discourage speeding.

The design also includes sidewalks and bike lanes that merge onto the pedestrian bridge over the train tracks at 300 North.
