SALT LAKE CITY — The National Weather Service is predicting cold weather will hit Utah after Sunday. Before that, snow is expected to hit northern Utah on Friday and Saturday.

According to a NWS Salt Lake City X post, lake-effect snow may hit the Salt Lake Valley and central Wasatch area.

Temperatures in the Salt Lake City area are predicted to hit 41 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday. Saturday is expected to be 31 F with Sunday predicted to rise to 32 F.

Preparing for the cold

With the cold weather expected to hit Utah, Rocky Mountain Power said in a news release that it is preparing for power outages.

Rocky Mountain Power is monitoring a weather system that is expected to bring extreme temperatures this weekend, likely resulting in higher than normal demand for electricity in the West as customers try to stay warm inside their homes,” the news release said.

The power company advised people to set their thermostats to 68 F while at home. This can help during high-demand times.

“Lower the temperature by several degrees when you are away from home and at bedtime,” the news release said.

Other ways to help include closing drapes and blinds, weatherstrip doors and caulk around window frames to keep heat inside.

“Limit use of appliances like ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers in the morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.,” RMP said. “Avoid use of portable space heaters. Set your water heater to 120°F and use efficient shower heads. [Make sure to] turn off lights, computers and electronics when not in use.”

The company also advised people to keep up on cleaning and replacing filters when needed.
