“Mrs. Tervort has been leading her school and district in the raising of Kindergarten students’ scores for over a decade. During that time, she has primarily taught full-day Kindergarten with the selection of students at a Title 1 school who scored lowest at the beginning of the year assessment. She believes all students can be successful no matter the starting point. Each year, nearly all–and sometimes all–of her students go from red (lowest proficiency) to green or blue (proficient or above proficient, respectively). Fellow teachers from her school, teachers and administration within her district, and even the Utah Department of Education have come to her classroom to observe her teaching strategies. Utah State University has been utilizing her to help teachers new to the profession. She has even compiled the specific phonemic awareness lists and lessons she has developed in her class into a book that has helped many other teachers with their own students both at the elementary and secondary levels. She truly cares about her students and their needs in starting their educational paths with confidence. She is valued and loved by teachers, students, and parents alike.”
