‘Cigarette ashes’ suspected to be cause of Layton structure fire

LAYTON — Fire officials believe cigarette ashes caused a Layton structure fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon.
According to a Facebook post from the Layton Fire Department, the fire broke out at a two-story four-plex near 1925 N. Hillfield Rd.
LFD said they were assisted by the Hill Air Force Base Fire Department when the report came in.
When arriving at the scene, the Battalion Chief said the fire was coming out of the south and west lower windows of one of the units, but didn’t appear to have extended to the other units.
The post stated that crews extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of arrival.
When questioning the occupant of the unit, she reported having “dropped cigarette ashes” in the bedroom, according to the post.
Damages to the unit are estimated to be $150,000. No one was harmed during the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the LFD.
