“Mrs. Henderson has an absolute blast teaching and lightly tormenting her students. She kicks off the school year by teasing her sixth graders about basic hygiene—because, let’s be honest, some of them need the reminder for the good of society. The class erupts into laughter—until she gives them the “I am not joking” look, leaving them unsure of whether or not to take her seriously. Spoiler alert: they should. With 30+ big sixth-graders in the room, it’s good advice. Parents later thank her for reinforcing the whole soap actually needs to touch your body, teeth are not self-cleaning, and underwear should be changed daily message.
Once they survive the Hygiene Talk, Mrs. Henderson takes things up a notch. She hands her class of gifted students problems so tough they make their stomachs drop faster than a roller coaster at the first big plunge. She lets them panic for just a moment before jumping in: “That feeling you have right now? That’s the feeling of not knowing what to do. And guess what? It’s a fantastic feeling! My goal this year is to get you to feel that as often as possible so you can learn how to push through it.” It isn’t long before they’re asking for more fun problems to solve.
Parents and students alike love Mrs. Henderson’s sharp mind and quirky humor. As her husband, I cannot take this woman anywhere without running into one of her 800+ former or current students—or their parents—who all adore her. And honestly, I get it. I married her. I can’t think of a teacher more deserving of a feature on KSL than my amazing wife, Mrs. Henderson. Of course, I might be a little biased.”
