SALT LAKE CITY — Police departments across Utah are ramping up patrols this week to enforce restrictions on fireworks.

Those caught setting off illegal fireworks could face misdemeanor charges according to Tooele City Police Cpl. Colby Bentley.

What is considered an illegal firework?

Fireworks are illegal when lit in restricted areas, Bentley said, are discharged on undesignated days or are brought in from another state. He said police won’t accept ignorance as an excuse.

“They know because you can’t buy illegal fireworks here in Utah,” said Bentley. “You’ve got to go across the border. So, there’s got to be some sort of action that you made to go buy an illegal firework somewhere. It’s not just … ignorance is bliss now.”

And if people think they won’t get caught, Bentley says it’s actually pretty easy to track them down. Offenders could face misdemeanor charges, a court appearance and a $1,000 fine— especially if they try to evade police.

Bentley said it is often neighbors who call in complaints and law enforcement can easily look up homeowner information.

“Just because you ran into the house for the end of the night, it doesn’t mean that we’re not going to follow up with you the next morning.”

Bentley said oftentimes, police prefer to give warnings and have educational conversations with offenders. If people try to evade police, they are likely to get a fine. For those who are unsure whether they are in a fireworks-restricted area, the Utah.

The Utah State Fire Marshall has compiled a list outlining where fireworks are currently restricted.
