S-Line extension aims to provide easier access to businesses, housing in Sugar House

SALT LAKE CITY — The TRAX S-Line will soon be extended as city officials are working on a plan to make Sugar House more walkable.
The S-Line currently starts at Fairmont Park and ends at the Central Point station on 2100 South. The extension would put the starting point just below Sugar House Park.
Josh Van Jura with the Utah Department of Transportation’s Trail and Transit Group stated that the estimated cost of the extension is $43 million, with funding provided by the city, state, and Utah Transit Authority.
Currently, it takes about 11 minutes to walk from the end of the S-Line to the University of Utah’s Sugar House Health Center.
After the extension is complete in 2027, that walk will be reduced to just two minutes.
Van Jura said it will be much easier for people to access the businesses, health center, and a 10-story apartment complex under construction there.
“This is a much better location that’s more visible than the Fairmont station and will allow people to realize how easy it is to take transit, so we expect that increased visibility to drive ridership as well.”
The average daily ridership is 1,400 passengers a day, but officials expect that number to increase to 2,200 once the extension is done.
