SALT LAKE CITY After two decades leading Utah football through one of the most successful eras in program history, Kyle Whittingham’s tenure has come to an end.

In a press release from Utah Athletics, the program announced Whittingham is stepping down from his role as head coach of Utah football.

Whittingham, 66, has served in that role since 2005. He has guiding the program from the Mountain West to the Pac-12, and then again into the Big 12. His tenure included two Pac-12 championships (2021, 2022), 15 bowl appearances, and 177 career victories, making him the winningest coach in school history and 38th all-time in all of college football.

Kyle Whittingham’s historic tenure with Utah football

When Whittingham took over as head coach on December 8, 2004, he inherited a program riding the high of a BCS-bowl win but standing at the edge of transition. From that moment forward, he didn’t just maintain success — he built something lasting.

With his career concluded, Whittingham stood atop the school’s record books as its all-time winningest head coach with 177 wins — no previous coach even comes close. Under his watch, Utah posted a winning record in 18 of 22 seasons, including a run of 10 straight winning seasons from 2014 to 2023.

No moment better captures his impact than the perfect 2008 season: a 13–0 record, a 31–17 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, and a final AP ranking of No. 2 — easily the most dominant season in program history.

Utah was invited to and made the transition to a Power-Conference thanks to him. When Utah joined the Pac-12 Conference, many expected growing pains. Instead, Utah thrived. Whittingham shepherded a program that won back-to-back league championships (2021, 2022), earned Rose Bowl berths, and stamped Utah as a legitimate top-tier school.

Through it all, stability was his hallmark. In a sport defined by turnover and hype, Whittingham delivered consistency — season after season, year in and year out. And when people look back, they won’t just see wins and trophies; they’ll see a program transformed into a standard–bearer of toughness, reliability, and quiet excellence.

Whittingham didn’t just coach games. He built an institution-oriented program that combined physical toughness, consistency, and integrity. From 2005 onward, nearly every season delivered wins, bowl games, or progress — and many delivered all three.

That steady upward trajectory is what turned “Utah football” from a pesky, regional program into a brand with a national notoriety worthy of power conference prestige and respect.

The impact beyond the wins

The Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center, the Ken Garff Red Zone expansion at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and the modernization of multiple athletic facilities all bear the fingerprints of Whittingham’s program.

This physical growth didn’t just enhance facilities — it elevated the university’s brand. With Utah regularly appearing in major bowls and power-conference competition, out-of-state interest spiked, media exposure increased, and donors stepped up.

Utah’s athletic leadership credits Whittingham as the foundation of this transformation — a cornerstone of the Utes’ identity, and a primary reason the university could compete at a national level on and off the field.

Utah football, under Whittingham, didn’t just win games — it reshaped what the University of Utah looked, felt, and aspired to be.

The transition ahead for Utah football

With Whittingham set to retire — the succession plan is already in established: Utah has Morgan Scalley lined up to be the next head coach of the football program.

The university named him “head coach in waiting” in July 2024. Scalley earned a base salary of $2.1 million in 2025 and his salary will jump to $5.1 million as head coach of Utah.

Scalley isn’t some outside hire or interim placeholder. He’s a lifer in the program — a former Ute All-America safety turned longtime assistant and defensive coordinator. Over 17+ years on staff, he’s built the defense that epitomizes Utah football: physical, disciplined, notoriously tough.

It will be up to Scalley to build upon the foundation that Whittingham has provided in this new era of college football.

We want to hear from you.
