SALT LAKE CITY — Six dogs were removed from a home in Weber County on Dec. 19 as the result of an anonymous tip received on Dec. 12.
According to the Weber County Animal Shelter, after obtaining a warrant and with the assistance of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the agency entered the home in question and found “six dogs in a kennel, three of which were puppies that appeared malnourished.”
In a statement to KSL, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said that while deputies were in the house “they noticed several dog bowls and dog food throughout the house and smeared dog feces on the walls.”
Lt. Colby Ryan said that because of questions regarding the cleanliness of the house, “deputies decided to notify the Division of Children and Family Services.” But because deputies didn’t believe the children were in danger, “the children were not removed from the house,” Ryan said.
Weber County Animal Shelter officials said the dogs were tested for canine parvovirus and tested negative. However, the dogs’ caretaker reportedly told shelter officials that the dogs had tested positive for the highly contagious virus.
The dogs were removed from the home and “have been placed in quarantine until Jan. 2 to prevent any chance of spreading parvo to the other dogs at the shelter,” shelter officials said.
“We never want to remove animals from a home, but when the animals’ living conditions appear unsafe, and they appear malnourished, it is our job to care for those animals,” shelter officials said. “The dogs from this incident that are now in our care are safe, warm, and fed.”
