Utah welcomes first professional softball team

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is officially stepping on to the national softball stage.
For the first time, elite women’s professional softball will call Utah home, with the Utah Talons launching as the state’s newest professional sports franchise.
The Talons are part of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, widely considered the premier professional softball league in the United States. After debuting last year with a touring format, the league is now transitioning to a traditional season — featuring six teams based in cities across the country.
Salt Lake City was selected as one of those host cities, a move city leaders say reflects Utah’s growing reputation as a destination for professional sports.
“We’re so thrilled to be selected as one of the few cities in the country that get to host these incredible professional athletes,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.
Players say fans can expect fast-paced, high-level competition when the Talons take the field.
“We have the most competitive league in the United States right now, so you will see high-level softball that is really fun to watch,” said Utah Talons player Hannah Flippen.
The Talons are coming off a championship season, and team leaders say they’re eager to bring that winning culture to Utah’s sports scene.
Opening day is scheduled for June 9, with home games set to be played at the University of Utah’s Dumke Stadium.
