Madison Cavender, Roy Jr High School

“Madison is a 2nd year teacher at Roy Jr High School. She is part of the CTE program and is a Family and Consumer Science teacher, teaching both sewing and foods 1 and 2. Madison has rather large classes of 40 students. She is very devoted to her students and guides them thru her classes.
Instead of just talking and or showing PowerPoint slides she records videos of different sewing techniques. She encourages her kids to enter FCCLA competitions where they can demonstrate their skills they learned in class. Last year she had 6 students go to nationals. Madison is 23 years old and has already obtained her Master’s. All of the kids enjoy Madison and can see the effort she takes to make sure they are learning but most of all enjoying learning. Her classes have a wait list because everyone wants to take her classes.
Her dedication to teaching valuable real life skills that some might dismiss because they feel the other classes like English, math, history are more important. Given her age she is dedicated to her craft and during school breaks she will put together her lesson plans and has incorporated new and fun sewing projects and on the cooking side she makes sure that they are fun recipes from all over the world. The recipes she has her class make are more than just smoothies and easy stuff. She recently had her classes make Shepards Pie, meatloaf, risotto all from scratch. Madison feels that the kids should have a broader palate and learn how to mlake them. She also gives them projects to make at home that are budget friendly.
Madison given her age is a very driven and talented teacher that deserves recognition. When she was at Weber High she was 1 of the 1st students in the entire Weber School District to take Teaching as a Profession and return to Weber School District to teach. She has been applauded by the District for doing this and she inspired others in the Weber School District to do the same. Madison is truly remarkable and please consider her for this award.”
