Scholarships offered for survivors of human trafficking

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah University is teaming with the anti-human trafficking Malouf Foundation to give out $9000 college scholarships.
In a news conference Tuesday, foundation chairwoman Kacie Malouf said the Juniper Scholarship has enough money to fund scholarships for 40 survivors.
Scholarships for human trafficking survivors at SUU
SUU Provost Jon Anderson said the scholarship is for a bachelor’s degree through SUU’s online general program. Students can choose from several areas of study, including political and institutional systems or family and human development, said Johnson.
Malouf says the name of the Juniper Scholarship comes from Utah’s juniper tree, which can grow despite harsh conditions. She compared the tree to survivors of human trafficking who “endure cruel environments, but still found hope and freedom,” according to KSL.com.
Students who hope to receive this scholarship must complete a personal essay and submit a referral form from a doctor, social worker or therapist. They must also already have been accepted into SUU’s online general studies program.
