WEST VALLEY CITY — The West Valley City Council passed a new parking ordinance on April 6th prohibiting parking within five feet of a driveway. Nobody commented on it at the time, but dozens of people reacted to the West Valley Police Department’s explanation of the new ordinance on its Facebook page.

The comments ranged from, “This is so dumb” to “Just one more govt overreach.” Most of them were critical, though there were some supportive statements, such as “I am glad for the change” from someone who said he owns six cars. There was also some discussion of multiple families living in single-family homes who park all their cars on the street.

Mayor Ron Bigelow said safety is always the top consideration for the city council, and he believes this parking ordinance would help to solve a safety problem.

“For example, if some of these pickups were parked there, or a van, it’s hard to see if any traffic is coming,” Bigelow told KSL Newsradio.

He thinks the ordinance will have minimal impact.

“It would reduce parking a little bit on the street, but not by very much,” he said.

West Valley City Manager Wayne Pyle said the ordinance was “considered in a normal process in an open and public meeting,” and he said, “We are always examining our ordinances” with the goal of making the city better.
