Tooele County vaccination clinics struggle to fill appointments

TOOELE, Utah — The Tooele County Health Department has set up COVID-19 vaccination clinics all over the county. Though the vaccination clinics were for teens initially, Tooele has opened up appointments to adults as well.

Health department officials reported they are expanding their efforts to get teens vaccinated by opening up more clinics. They brought in roughly 12,000 Pfizer vaccine doses since it is the only vaccine approved for teens.

However, this is the first week officials have struggled to fill vaccination appointments. Tooele County Health Department spokesman Amy Bates confirmed not all their spots were filled this week for vaccinations.

“When we looked at our numbers of pre-registered students, we were at 600 [appointments] total,” Bates said.

So, they are allowing adults who haven’t been vaccinated and walk-ins to use the clinics at their schools.

Vaccine appointments are now available for all Utahns 16 years old and older. The Tooele County Health Department is currently providing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which has been approved for use only for those 18 years old and older. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can only receive the Pfizer vaccine.

As a reminder, you no longer have to exclusively get the vaccine at your local health department – you can get the vaccine at a local pharmacy, from a healthcare provider, or even a health department in a different county.

To ensure adequate supply, the Tooele County Health Department advises that you get your second dose through the same provider as your first dose.
