Event offers free formal wear option for Utah teens heading to prom

SALT LAKE CITY — This Saturday the fourth annual Teen Formal Wear Swap will offer affordable fashion for Utah teens headed to school dances.
With prom and other dance formals around the corner, buying brand-new clothes is not always affordable or sustainable. The County Library plans to offer hundreds of formal items, like dresses, dress shirts, suits, shoes, and accessories.
Prior to the swap, all formal wear has been laundered and pressed. This year you can even find new items with tags.
Attendance is free. The event is on Saturday, March 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the County Library in Taylorsville located at 4870 South 2700 West.
“Prom dresses can range from $100 to $700 dollars, while a men’s suit typically costs around $300 dollars,” said Program Coordinator Angie Wager. “That can put a real economic strain on a family, and in some cases, make formal events too expensive. We try to close the financial gap so everyone has access to a magical and memorable night.”
