Rain or shine, Nihon Matsuri, the Japanese street festival, is happening this Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY — Grab your umbrella and go to Nihon Matsuri, or the Japanese street festival, this Saturday.
The festival is on 100 South between the Salt Palace and the Delta Center. There will be more than 40 booths with vendors featuring food like tempura, bento boxes and sushi.
Stephanie Sueoka, one of the Nihon Matsuri organizers said the timing is critical because of what’s being proposed for the area.
“I think it’s important that people come down and see the significance and the relevance of our festival and this street and how it’s important that we preserve it,” she said.
Entertainment at Nihon Matsuri includes singers, comedians and the Ogden Buddhist Taiko Group. The taiko drum group is one of the highlights of the festival for Sueoka.
“We have had this hidden treasure not really realizing their significance,” Sueoka said. “They have original members who are actually Topaz descendants.”
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is available at the Salt Palace off 300 West.
