SALT LAKE CITY — Thunderstorms and heavy rain is expected to take over this weekend, but many people aren’t letting that ruin their plans.

From The RedWest Music Festival, football games and just driving anywhere in general, officials are doing what they can to ensure people stay safe during the possibility of severe weather.

The RedWest Music Festival

Country music fans are excited to attend The RedWest Music Festival rain or shine.

The festival is almost sold out; and it makes sense with headliners like Kacey Musgraves, Post Malone and Noah Kahan.

Festival organizers said they have safety protocols in place if lightning or wind gets out of control. There are also evacuation plans which include pausing or delaying the programming if need be.

RedWest organizers will provide updates through email, on social media and on their website.

Umbrellas are not allowed in the venue but ponchos or raincoats are welcome and encouraged with the weather meteorologists are expecting.

University of Utah football in the rain

It’s expected to pour Saturday night, promising an extra layer of difficulty when the Utah Utes host Arizona State.

Thanks to the expected weather, there is a chance everyone could be sent packing from the Rice-Eccles Stadium.

“Lighting is an automatic 30-minute delay from the most recent lighting strikes. So if lighting hits there’s a 30 minute delay, if it hits again the 30 minute clock starts again until lighting has cleared the area,” said Sam Farnsworth, KSL TV sports anchor.

Meaning it could be a long night for football fans.

BYU Football is heading out of state this weekend but the rain is following them to Tucson, AZ. BYU’s game against the Arizona Wildcats is set to kick off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, even though the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the area

BYU Football Insider, Mitch Harper said the heavy rain will definitely effect how the game will be played. He said the strategy will be to keep the ball closer to the ground.

Staying safe while traveling

With heavy rains and possible flooding, state emergency managers are warning people to watch for flash flooding across most of Central and Southern Utah.

Genevieve Keys with the Utah Department of Public Safety said pretty much everyone in Utah needs to be prepared for the possibility of floods.

Keys said drivers should not drive through a flooded area because the water is often deeper than it looks.  She reminded drivers that a car can float in just a foot of water, and a car can be carried away by just two feet of water.

Keys also said it’s critical for people to know how to get to higher ground.  She said most of us know we need to get there, but a lot of people forget to figure out where the higher ground is and how to get there.
