SALT LAKE CITY — Fire officials said 200 people were evacuated from the Salt Lake Metro Jail on Thursday after a fire broke out.
According to officials on scene, a contractor was working on the HVAC system in the building at the time the flames began, which was sometime before noon on Thursday.
Fire Chief Terry Addison with the South Salt Lake Fire Department said many fire departments responded to the scene.
Addison made no mention of any possible injuries.
According to him, bookings into the jail would be halted. Inmates who had been staying in pods wouldn’t be let back in “until it is safe,” Addison said.
