SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities are investigating an explosion at Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems that happened Wednesday morning.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Cade Palmer with Box Elder County confirmed that a building at the Northrop Grumman facility at Promontory Point is a total loss and was still on fire as of 9 a.m.

According to police, the explosion was reported at 7:38 a.m. Police asked people to avoid the area as emergency services managed the scene.

Northrop Grumman said it was working to find the cause of the explosion.

“We are actively working to determine the cause of the incident involving one of our buildings at our Promontory, Utah, facility on April 16. All employees working in or near the building are safe with no significant injuries. Several employees were working in and near the building at the time of the incident and all evacuated safely.

This incident will not affect progress on any Northrop Grumman programs, operations or solid rocket motor production. The building where the incident occurred was used to produce an ingredient in solid rocket motor propellant and is one of many in our production network. Additionally, no solid rocket motors were lost or damaged.

Our employees are our greatest asset, and their safety is our top priority. Our protocols, which are under near constant review both internally as well as by peer organizations and onsite government entities, proved to keep employees safe in this unfortunate event.

The Promontory site is one of several across the country that support our solid rocket motor production and testing. Promontory is a large property with over 800 buildings and nearly 20,000 acres of land. The company continues to add additional solid rocket motor capacity to support future customer needs and remains committed to delivering the most capable, reliable and valuable products for our customers,” the statement read.
