90 families evacuated after Lehi apartment explosion

LEHI, Utah — The Lehi Police Department said that 90 families were evacuated from their apartments this morning after an apartment explosion.

Lehi PD and Lehi Fire Department responded to a reported explosion at the Lehi Tech Apartments near 200 South at 4:10 a.m., according to a press release.

A husband and wife occupied the unit. They both sustained minor injuries from debris and were treated on-scene. No additional injuries have been reported in relation to the Lehi apartment explosion. 

Lehi PD said that units near the explosion were damaged by water from the building’s sprinkler system. Families will continue their evacuation until the building is deemed safe to re-enter. 

Jeanteil Livingston with Lehi City said the apartment building would allow displaced families to stay in unoccupied units for the time being.

“It is currently unknown when residents can return to their homes,” Livingston said in a press release.

The American Red Cross is ready to fill any gaps. But, the organization said it has some shortcomings right now.

“Many of our volunteers have been deployed back east to the hurricane response. So it makes it even more challenging right now when… our highest priority is making sure our local families and individuals are taken care of,” said Benjamin Donner, the executive director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Lehi PD said that the circumstances surrounding the incident are suspicious.
