SR-201 eastbound reopens after road rage shooting closed it for hours

SALT LAKE CITY — One person is dead and another is in custody following what police say is a road rage shooting on eastbound SR-201 near 900 West.

Utah Highway Patrol closed the SR-201 area for eastbound traffic on Redwood Road as they investigated the shooting. It reopened Monday afternoon after an 8-hour closure.

An initial post on X said the closure is due to an ongoing police investigation.

According to UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden, the incident happened Monday morning around 5:20 a.m.

“This appears to be a road rage incident that escalated into a shooting that happened just prior to the 900 West off-ramp on 201 eastbound. We have one individual that is deceased, and the other individual is in custody with law enforcement,” said Roden.

According to police the victim was a 50-year-old man. Police arrested 44-year-old man at the scene.

Police hope witnesses to the incident will come forward to help the investigation.

“If there are others that saw this incident … that have information, that may even have video or anything like that, we encourage them to please contact the Utah Highway Patrol dispatch center,” said Roden.
