KAYSVILLE — A man was hospitalized after a part of a tree knocked him unconscious, and he went into cardiac arrest while being rescued by first responders on Wednesday morning.

The Kaysville Police Department later said the man died from his injuries that same day after being air lifted to the hospital. The department identified him as 49-year-old Santos Baudilio Lopez Perez.

Kaysville Fire Department Fire Chief Paul Erickson told KSL residents on 134 E. Shadowbrook Lane hired the man to cut down a tree.

The department said the man was about 30 feet in the air and secured by a harness when part of the tree fell and hit him on the head, knocking him unconscious. A neighbor witnessed the accident and called first responders.

“Given the complexity of the rescue, additional support was requested from Layton Fire and Farmington Fire. A University of Utah AirMed helicopter was also called to the scene,” the department said in a press release.

With support from the Farmington and Layton Fire Departments, Kaysville rescue technicians set up a rope-lowering system to rescue the man. However, the man went into cardiac arrest while being pulled down.

The Kaysville Fire Department offers classes to teach individuals and groups about CPR. You can contact the department for more information.
