Man killed by police during Orem search was not subject of warrant, investigators say

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah County investigators said a man shot and killed by the Major Crimes Task Force earlier this month was not the subject of the warrant they were serving.

According to a press release, the task force had been investigating a resident living near 400 North and 800 East in Orem. They had a drafted search warrant signed by a judge. 

On May 5, the subject of the warrant, Alejandro Demery, was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail on two felony counts of drug possession with intent to distribute. Before the arrest, he was seen leaving his residence. 

Additionally, officers discovered he was in possession of about 150 fentanyl pills, 11.8 grams of methamphetamine, and a THC cartridge. 

Later, the task force served the warrant. Inside, they ran into a different man who was allegedly not complying with their orders. A confrontation followed, resulting in shots being fired by law enforcement. 

A handgun, which was loaded, was found on the floor. The man later died. 

The shooting is still under investigation. Police have not released the name of the man.
