SALT LAKE CITY — Americans are expected to spend $11 billion this Halloween season. But, despite that figure, a small majority of Americans will be spending less than they did last year.
Trying to keep up with your next door neighbor with Halloween displays could cost you an arm and a leg, but it doesn’t have to. The National Retail Federation says 57% of Americans are spending five dollars less this year than last.
Even so, it’s still 32% more than 2019.
The National Retail Federation cites increasing prices as a reason for the decreased per-person spend. They say that many are going the budget route on candy and costumes. Many are doing this by buying candy in bulk from dollar stores and re-using or crafting costumes from scratch.
Meanwhile, the report says others are ‘scaring’ their wallets by buying $600 pumpkins, animatronics for front yard displays, and custom costumes.
