SALT LAKE CITY — IRS workers in Ogden are trying to cope with the chaos of having their entire staff back in the office. Employees were ordered back into the office by this past Monday.
The local National Treasury Employees Union legislative coordinator, Daniel Martinez, characterized the transition as chaotic and confusing.
“An estimated 2,000 folks coming back to all the buildings here in Ogden — they just weren’t prepared for that.”
Martinez said many of those people have always been on telework agreements, so the infrastructure was not equipped to handle it.
“Not being prepared for all the folks coming back into the office the WiFi on that Monday just crashed,” Martinez said. “The server [was] just overloaded with folks.”
Martinez said some cubicles had five people assigned to them, and some employees have had to use conference rooms as offices.
He said that while local IRS leaders have been doing a great job trying to mitigate the problems, it is unclear how they are going to accommodate the changes being ordered from the top.
“It’s a lot of confusion coming from the top … we feel for that because they’re doing all they can but a lot of this is happening to the IRS, not necessarily coming from the head of the agency.”
